Introduction

The Master of Science in Instrumental Analytical Chemistry, formally known as Master of Science (Analytical Chemistry & Instrumental Analysis) is a coursework-based postgraduate programme offered by Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. This academic programme has been accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) which is the world’s leading chemistry community and professional associations. The accreditation is a mark of assurance that the programme is in line with international quality and standards to enhance the graduate prospects and employment opportunities. This programme aims to cater for the growing needs of modern day industry which require competent personnel who are knowledgeable in the handling of a sophisticated range of analytical instruments as well as possessing the interpretative skills necessary to solve complex chemistry problems. The courses are based on modern instrumental analytical chemistry and designed to address the needs of testing laboratories and research organizations.

Programme Learning Outcomes

At the end of the program, graduates of this programme are able to:

Master the relevant knowledge in the field of advanced analytical chemistry.
Plan laboratory procedures with the use of analytical instrumentin solving problems; recording, analyzing data, and expressing measurement results precisely and effectively.
Demonstrate social skills for sustainable development in analytical chemistry practices as well as manage the activities and tasks responsibly.
Practice ethics and professionalism in the work related to analytical chemistry by prioritizing the interests of customers and society.
Communicate effectively between leaders and team members on analytical chemistry topics.
Use scientific and critical thinking skills in solving analytical chemistry problems.
Handle tasks using information technology and up-to-date analytical tools.
Recognize the need for lifelong learning and entrepreneurialskills for career advancement.

English Language Entry Requirements

Local applicant must possess MUET Band 4.

International applicant must possess either one of the following:

MUET Band 4
IELTS Band 5.5
PTE Score 42
TOEFL Score 550 (PBT), 213 (CBT) or 80 (iBT)

Exemption from the English Language requirement (only for international applicants):

applicant is from a Country where the National Language is the English Language;

applicant possesses academic qualification from an institution which uses English Language fully

Academic Entry Requirement

Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA not less than 3.00; or
Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA between 2.70 to 2.99 and fulfil at least one (1) criteria*; or
Bachelor's degree with a CGPA of 2.50 to 2.69 and fulfil at least one (1) criteria* (for UM graduate applicant) or two (2) criteria* (for non UM graduate applicant); or
Bachelor's degree with a CGPA of 2.00 to 2.49 and meets at least one (1) of the following criteria* (for UM graduate applicant) or two (2) criteria* (for non UM graduate applicant); or
other qualification approved by Senate from time to time

* Criteria:

graduate of University of Malaya;
Has at least one (1) year of working experience in the related field;
has produced publications in the related fields;
is a scholarship recipient;
a government agency staff;
passed the interview conducted by the Faculty; or
passed the special assessment by the Faculty.
