On 23 April 2018, Professor John L. Esposito delivered a special lecture with the title “Muslim World and the West: New Challenges”. The event was held at the Main Lecture Hall, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya (UM).
Also present among the audience were the UM Chancellor, HRH the Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, Pro-Chancellor, Toh Puan Dato’ Seri Hajjah Dr. Aishah Ong, Chairman, Board of Directors, Tan Sri Dato' Sri Professor Dr. Zakri Abdul Hamid, Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Abdul Rahim Hashim as well as the Director, Academy of Islamic Studies, Dato’ Professor Dr. Mohd Yakub @ Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff.
John L. Esposito is a Professor of Religion and International Affairs and of Islamic Studies at the Georgetown University. He is also the Founding Director of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding and The Bridge Initiative: Protecting Pluralism – Ending Islamophobia in the Walsh School of Foreign Service.
In 1974, he received his PhD from Temple University, with a specialization in Islamic Studies and a minor in Comparative Religions. Previously, he underwent training in Arabic Language at the Middle East Center for Arab Studies, Lebanon and also at the University of Pennsylvania, which renders him a strong ground in dealing with issues related to Islam. His previous appointments include the President of the American Academy of Religion and Middle East Studies Association of North America, a member of the World Economic Forum’s Council of 100 Leaders, and the E.C. European Network of Experts on De-Radicalisation, among other experiences in the area.
Professor John Esposito has written more than 55 books, which have been translated into many languages such as Shariah: What Everyone Needs to Know (written with Natana Delong-Bas), Islam and Democracy after the Arab Spring (written with J. Voll & Tamara Sonn), and What a Billion Muslims Really Think (written with Dalia Mogahed). Being an Editor-in-Chief of The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World (6 vols.), Professor John Esposito is presently the Editor-in-Chief of Oxford Islamic Studies Online and Series Editor of The Oxford Library of Islamic Studies.
