By: Dr Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad
In conjunction to the #UM111 Celebration, the Sustainability Science (SuSci) Research Cluster in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) have organized a Sustainable Science Public Lecture on 21 April 2016.
The event was very timely due to the recent release of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations on September 25th 2015. All nations, including Malaysia are currently developing national strategies to incorporate the SDGs in their policies. Sustainability Science, as a new academic discipline and scientific approach to address sustainability is crucial to this agenda.
En. Mohd Johaary Abdul Hamid, an alumni of STS from MARDI was invited to give a presentation entitled “Food Sustainability in the City: Urbankit for Urban Community” to compliment the main public lecture by Prof Nik Meriam Nik Sulaiman (former dean of the Sustainability Science Research Cluster) on bringing the SDGs in Malaysia to action. En. Johaary’s talk directly addresses one of the SDGs on Sustainable Cities and Communities. He demonstrated how research, development and innovation work in MARDI has and can be used to address the sustainability issue of urban food security. About 15 STS alumnis, staff and students from the Faculty of Science attended the event.
