Master of Science in Applied Physics

The Department of Physics has seen tremendous growth since its inception in 1959. The academic staff members are actively involved in many areas of physics research. The strength of the Department lies in the areas of solid state physics, plasma physics, applied radiation, laser physics, photonics, solid state ionic, advanced materials, polymer physics, space physics as well as theoretical physics. The quality of research is of international standing with staff members regularly publishing in highly reputed international Journals. Beside research, some of the staff members also carry out consultancy work for local as well as international companies such as Tenaga Nasional Research & Development (TNRD), Nippon Glass (Japan) and Ciba Vision (USA). All the academic and consultancy activities provide the essential background for postgraduate training.


Course Structure

Provide a platform for graduates in science, engineering and relevant field in addition of employee who already have professional experience in the field of science and engineering in the industrial sector who wish to deepen and strengthen the prospects of a career in these fields to a master's degree in producing graduates who are knowledgeable, skilled and competitive in research and industry within and outside the country.

SQA7001 Research Methodology in Applied Physics
The course will provide enough knowledge and expertise to the postgraduate students to use the proper research methods in their respective research projects. The content of the course involves introduction to research Methodology, preparing research proposal, literature review, experimental design, report/thesis writing, presentation techniques and ethnics in Research.

This course requires students to carryout research project assigned by Supervisor (experimental/computerization/theoretical calculation). Students are required to complete and present a report (> 60 pages) based on the project outcomes.

SQA7003 Measurement Techniques and Instrumentation  
The course objectives are to explain and understand the technology used in testing, analyse and characterize experimental outcomes. Course content includes introduction to machine and instrumental mechanics, such as electron scanning microscopy, optical microscopy, electron beam microscopy, diffraction method, spectroscopy methods, electrical methods, mechanical measurement and track analysis.

This course requires students to carry out thorough review of specified areas of Applied Physics relevant to his/her research project (SQA7002). Course objectives are to provide overall view of types, principles, management techniques and plasma applications. Content covers introduction to plasma Physics and device technology including electromagnetic shock tube, vacuum spark, dense plasma focus, pulsed capillary discharge, dual plasma RF by induction and dielectric discharge barrier.

 For international students, candidates are required to have TOEFL results at least 550 or IELTS at least  Band 5.5
Entry Requirement

Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree with Honors CGPA 3.0 and above or equivalent in the relevant field.

Applicants with a Bachelor's Degree of CGPA 2.7 to 2.99 may be considered if they meet at least one of the following criteria:
 

A. Having relevant work experience; or

B. Produce publications in related fields; or

C. is a recipient of a scholarship; or

D. is a graduate of the University of Malaya; or

E. is a government servants

Applicants with a Bachelor's Degree of CGPA 2.5 to 2.69 may be considered if they meet at least two of the criteria in (1) (A) to (E) above
